Are you looking for a school where you're not just a number but it's still big on fun? Maybe UNC is for you!
WHERE IS UNC?
University of Northern Colorado is located in Greeley, 64 miles Northeast of Denver. Greeley has a population of 90,000 with a lot of diversity. The city has about 300 days of sunshine per year and is only about an hour drive away from the beautiful mountainous city of Estes Park. The area around Greeley is booming with new commerce and new housing developments that is making Greeley a whole new town. Between the outlet malls that are only 15 minutes away to a new movie theatre and tons of new restaurants, Greeley isn’t the sleepy, quiet town it used to be.

WHAT LIFE IS LIKE ON CAMPUS
- The class sizes on the UNC campus are smaller than the other state universities. One of the largest class sizes is around 75 students per one lecture hall versus the 500 student lecture halls at University of Colorado and Colorado State University. The entire university is smaller and laid back. The campus has a “small town” feel where you know many of the students and faculty and they know you. You won’t feel like you’re just a number.
- If you’re looking for big Greek involvement or a huge sports school, UNC is not for you. UNC definitely has these organizations but they aren’t as prominent here as they are at larger universities. This is not to say the games aren’t fun or the Greeks aren’t involved. The Bears definitely have their school spirit.
- Like many other public university’s, UNC has a pretty good mix of the party kids and the academic kids, but at UNC has a whole sub-genre all its own; the music kids.
- Greeley’s heritage includes a lot of German culture and every September 30th, Downtown Greeley throws one of the best Oktoberfest’s in Northern Colorado.
AREAS UNC IS BEST KNOWN FOR
- TEACHING- UNC started out as a teaching school back in 1889 and if you ask anyone in Colorado what it’s best known for many of them will still say teaching. They have a phenomenal teaching program that is really committed to making students effective educators for all levels and subjects.
- MUSIC- UNC is also known for music, both performance and instrumental. It’s is a world renowned music program that has alumni on Broadway and continuing studies at Juilliard in NYC. UNC hosts a National Jazz Festival every year that attracts world famous musicians.
- BUSINESS- UNC has been making a name for itself with their business school. In 2004, the Monfort School of Business received the Baldridge Award for National Quality. This award is given for excellence in quality in particular fields. And for 2008, U.S. News & World Report ranked the business school 126 out of all business schools in the nation. For only being an undergraduate program and having 1,200 students, this is a huge accomplishment.
SPECIAL THINGS ABOUT UNC
- UNC’s athletics were recently bumped up to Division I so the visiting teams will be bigger schools and there is now more funding for the athletic department.
- The library is the James A. Michener library. Michener got his Master’s in Education at UNC in the 1930’s and later returned as a teacher as well as teaching at Harvard University. He’s written over 40 novels, one entitled Centennial which was inspired by his time in Greeley.
