The first attribute that one notices on campus is beauty. Nestled in the middle of a major city but close to the mountains is the University of Washington-Seattle.

Within the limits of "The Emerald City" lies a spirted campus, the University of Washington. The school provides students the opportunity to learn both on and off campus.

Academics at UW-Seattle

The college offers over 150 academic departments/degrees, providing a wide array of studying opportunities. While many of the degrees are impressive, it is the science and engineering programs that are able to boast the loudest. For example, the school hosts the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science & Engineering, which was partially funded by Allen and the Gates Foundation. This building allows student state of the art technology in the field. Other incredible programs available at UW-Seattle are within the medical sciences. The Gates Foundation awarded the school a $105 million gift to combat global health. The school is committed to teaching students global citizenship and equips them with the education to venture into the world.

Student Demographics at UW-Seattle

The university is indeed a large campus hosting over 28,000 students. Virtually equal male to female ratios, UW-Seattle attracts a majority of in-state students of all ethnicities. While highly diverse in ethnicity, the campus slants almost exclusively liberal, this may detour students of other beliefs from attending. Global responsibility and environmental issues are main focuses for students on campus.

Leisure Time at UW-Seattle

The college provides a plethora of campus activities for students: sports, organizations, community services, and fitness. It is usually the off-campus activities that attract students to the college. Students can take a breather from academics and participate in fun outdoor activities: boating, hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, kayaking, fishing, camping, cycling, backpacking, snowboarding, and skiing to name a few.

Students can also take advantage of activities in the city during their downtime. Seattle hosts many types of activities. Students can venture on a tour of Seattle Underground, attend the Seattle International Film Festival, see a show at over 50 theatres, watch concerts, visit museums, and tour several other tourist points. Seattle provides multiple affordable options of transportation for students.

Fun Fact about UW-Seattle

While on a campus tour you will be provided a multitude of fun facts about the college. When the tour approaches the Mary Gates Hall, the guide will give a short story about Mary Gates. While Mary was an honored person in her own right, the story shared includes her famous son, Bill Gates, and some mischievous computer antics on campus. An accomplice to the story also includes Paul Allen.

The UW-Seattle offers both an academic and environmental focus for interested students. Located in a major city and close to Olympic National Park, UW-Seattle allows students the best of both worlds. Students most attracted to this campus are socially conscience and voice their opinions related to politics and social issues. The size of the student body and campus may intimidate some students, but the university attempts to make the experience an intimate as possible through independent educational methods, academic communities, and student led activities.
