Review of Quinnipiac UniversityCampus Life, Academics and Student Organizations at Quinnipiac
Quinnipiac has a lot to offer its students in all areas of college life including, campus facilities, academic courses, and extra curricular activities.
Residing peacefully next to the beautiful Sleeping Giant Park, Quinnipiac University is home to approximately 5,400 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate students. Located in Hamden, Conn., the University is right in between New York City and Boston. Quinnipiac is a private, non-sectarian, co-educational school, highly rated by U.S. News & World Report and Princeton Review: The Best 368 Colleges. Campus LifeThe aesthetically pleasing campus consists of a lush, green quad and brick classroom buildings on 212 acres of land. The 11 residential halls are located on “Bobcat Way,” only a short distance from the main part of campus. Four of the dorms are traditional style, five are suites, and the remaining two are apartment-style. Quinnipiac provides three years of housing for incoming freshmen, but requires students to find off-campus housing in their senior year. However, the housing system might change in the near future due to the school’s new, York Hill site. Sophomores and juniors wishing to live in dorms enter a lottery system in the spring to determine housing for the fall. Everything on the campus is within walking distance, such as the Carl Hansen Student Center and Arnold Bernhard Library that are both centrally located, with easy access for students. The library is open 24/7 with the exception of school breaks and certain holidays. The campus considers security and safety as a top priority. There are security guards at the campus’ two entrances (Mt. Carmel Ave. and New Rd.), providing 24-hour service. AcademicsQuinnipiac consists of four major schools that encompass the University: School of Communications, Business, Liberal Arts and Health Sciences. There are over 50 different majors offered, and 19 graduate school options. Due to the school’s relatively small student body, it also offers close student-teacher relationships, with a 16:1 ratio. Some popular majors include: occupational therapy, marketing, psychology, and media productions. The school provides study abroad programs in a number of countries, as well as a semester at sea. If students are having difficulty in a particular class, there is the Learning Center with tutors specializing in a number of courses. This resource if free for students, and is highly recommended if they’re struggling in any of their classes. Student ActivitiesWith over 70 student organizations on campus, there is plenty to get involved with. Quinnipiac offers a variety of activities to join that range from the Student Programming Board, to writing for the student-run newspaper, The Chronicle. In recent years, interest in Greek life has also grown. The campus has 2 fraternities: Sigma Phi Epsilon and Tau Kappa Epsilon as well as, 3 sororities: Alpha Chi Omega, Phi Sigma Sigma, and Kappa Alpha Theta. Other clubs include Q30 (TV channel), WQAQ (radio station), GLASS, international club, Habitat for Humanity, QU Snow Club (skiing and snowboarding), SADD, intramurals, and much more. Because cars are not permitted freshman year, students can get off campus by a shuttle provided by the University. It runs all week long to the Hamden shopping plazas (Wal-Mart, Stop & Shop, Old Navy, TJ Maxx, Panera Bread, Blockbuster, Kohls) and into New Haven. Here at this growing University, students can choose from a wide range of academic courses that are provided within its four main schools. In addition, the University has a lot to offer an incoming freshman with its beautiful and safe environment, campus facilities, and countless activities to get involved with. For more information visit the school's Website.
